Eye Allergies Q & A

What are eye allergies?

Eye allergies occur when your eyes react to allergens (substances that trigger an allergic response). Unlike infections, eye allergies aren't contagious.

They happen when your immune system overreacts to something harmless, causing inflammation in your conjunctiva, the thin layer of tissue that covers the white part of your eye and the inside of your eyelids.

What are the symptoms of eye allergies?

Eye allergies can cause a range of irritating symptoms, including:

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery or teary eyes
  • Burning or stinging sensations
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Gritty or “sandy” feeling in your eyes

These symptoms often occur in both eyes and can happen seasonally (due to pollen) or year-round (from indoor allergens like dust or pet dander).

What causes eye allergies?

Common triggers of eye allergies include:

  • Pollen from trees, grasses, or weeds (common in spring and fall)
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Mold spores
  • Smoke or strong odors
  • Contact lenses or lens solutions (in some cases)

It’s possible to be more sensitive to allergens than others, especially if you have a history of seasonal allergies, asthma, or eczema.

How are eye allergies treated?

The Hamilton Vistasite Eye Care team advises you to begin treating eye allergies by avoiding known triggers. Keep windows closed during high-pollen days, use air purifiers indoors, wash bedding frequently, and avoid rubbing your eyes, which can worsen symptoms.

In addition, your provider might recommend or prescribe the following to help manage symptoms, including:

  • Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops
  • Prescription eye drops for inflammation or severe reactions
  • Oral antihistamines to reduce allergic response
  • Cold compresses to ease irritation and swelling

If you have persistent or severe symptoms, your provider can offer guidance and ensure your symptoms aren’t due to a more serious issue, like an eye infection or dry eye syndrome.

Eye allergies can be frustrating, but with the right treatment and prevention, relief is within reach. If you’re unsure what’s causing your symptoms, you don’t have to delay treatment.
